Job Description

About the Company:
Founded in 2017 by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, AGBO is an artist-led, Academy Award–winning independent studio redefining global storytelling across film, television, and gaming. With 15 #1 openings and more than $7 billion at the box office, its hits include Marvel's highest-grossing film Avengers: Endgame , the multi-Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once , and Netflix blockbusters The Gray Man and Extraction . AGBO's Citadel universe has become a worldwide Prime Video sensation, while recent projects in post-production, include The Bluff (Amazon MGM) and The Whisper Man (Netflix). Upcoming releases include Citadel Season 2 and Marvel Studios' epic Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), both directed by the Russo Brothers and produced by AGBO.

In 2023, AGBO welcomed Donald Mustard—former Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games and co-creator of Fortnite —as a partner. Mustard brings a bold creative vision to AGBO: to expand what storytelling can be through immersive, interconnected worlds that span across media. We're building the future of storytelling—and we're looking for bold, creative minds to help shape it. If you're ready to help define what comes next, we'd love to meet you.

Position Summary:
As Game Designer, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the moment-to-moment gameplay and core systems that define the player's journey. You are a systems-focused, player-first designer who understands how mechanics, narrative, and presentation work together to create meaningful experiences. From progression systems to social features, exploration, and world interaction, you'll help define how players connect with the game world.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you'll collaborate with engineers, artists, animators, and narrative designers to prototype, iterate, and refine engaging gameplay systems. You'll be instrumental in balancing innovation with accessibility to ensure AGBO's interactive experiences are as compelling and emotionally resonant as our film and television stories.

This role is based in Raleigh, NC, and candidates located in or willing to relocate to the area are highly preferred, as close collaboration with our technical and creative teams is central to the position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, prototype, and iterate on core gameplay systems (progression, exploration, player abilities, interactions, and feedback loops).
  • Define and refine mechanics that enhance player immersion, facilitate emotional engagement, and provide meaningful game interactions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, artists, and narrative teams to integrate mechanics seamlessly into story and world design.
  • Participate in playtests, analyze feedback and metrics, and use them to tune and evolve gameplay.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, highly iterative design culture where ideas are tested, challenged, and refined.
  • Craft exciting gameplay experiences that allow players to explore game worlds in novel and meaningful ways.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5+ years of professional game design experience with at least one shipped title.
  • Demonstrated expertise in systems design, progression, and player engagement loops.
  • Proficiency with UE5 Blueprints and the Gameplay Ability System for prototyping mechanics.
  • Strong grasp of character, camera, and controls and how they inform player experiences.
  • Proven ability to work cross-discipline with animation, narrative, and engineering.
  • Passion for iteration, prototyping, and crafting joyful, meaningful player experiences.
  • Significant experience in UE4 and/or UE5.

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience designing narrative-driven or cinematic gameplay systems.
  • Familiarity with live service or social gameplay features.
  • Previous experience at a startup or early-phase project.
  • Interest in film, cross-medium storytelling, or experimental gameplay.
